I’m happy to share that The Arithmetic of Happiness: How Jeremy Bentham Tried to Count the Human Soul by Boris Kriger is now available as an audiobook.

This one is especially meaningful because it marks the fifth book I’ve narrated for Boris.

There’s something rewarding about returning to an author’s work again and again. With each project, you get a better sense of the rhythm of the writing, the way ideas are built, and the tone that best serves the material. By the fifth book, there’s a familiarity there—but never a sense that the work is repeating itself.

The Arithmetic of Happiness takes on a fascinating question: Can something as subjective as happiness actually be measured?

The book explores the ideas of Jeremy Bentham and his attempt to bring logic, calculation, and structure to questions of pleasure, pain, morality, and human well-being. It’s philosophical, historical, and surprisingly relevant to the way we still try to quantify human experience today.

From a narration standpoint, that made it an interesting balance. The material is thoughtful and analytical, but it still needs to feel conversational and accessible. The goal isn’t simply to explain an idea—it’s to make the listener want to stay with it long enough to see where that idea leads.

That’s one of the things I’ve enjoyed about working with Boris. His books tend to ask big questions, but they don’t require the listener to come in with a philosophy degree to follow along.

Five books in, I’m grateful for the continued opportunity to bring his work to audio.
